What is SIP or Session Initiation Protocol ?

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signalling protocol which is basically used for creating , controlling and destroying real time sessions. in that session include voice video and messaging. sip protocol is deigned for controlling multimedia session over the internet protocol.

for example in present we are using too many app for communications like whats app , Skype. mainly theses application using sip protocol for there communication. 

It is application layer protocol that works with many of other protocol like HTTP and SMTP. Whats app, Skype based on VoIP technology that means voice over Internet protocol. When two devices are communicating with each other on IP it is called VoIP. The Sip protocol control multimedia commutations

It is IETF protocol for VoIP which can be use in textual and multimedia sessions for example voice calling, video calling, instant messages.
